When we created thenorthernsilverco. we thought about all the ways we could minimise our environmental impact within our business. We started with small steps like choosing plastic-free packaging but then we started to think bigger. We did a lot of research into slow fashion and sustainability and how we can minimise our impact and support a greener future.

Slow fashion is the creation of pieces with awareness. It's all about being aware of the impact that piece can have, looking at all the processes involved in creating fashion pieces and thinking about how you can produce pieces more sustainably. Slow fashion also works to refocus our throw away mindset which sees thousands of tonnes of unsold products burnt or thrown away every year.
How do we do this? Well we are a small business so everything is made here in our workshop. There is no need to outsource minimising the environmental impact of shipping our jewellery to and from places. The recycled sterling silver known as Ecosilver, that we use in our pieces, is made here in the UK. Other silver and gold we use in our pieces comes from recycled bench scraps which would have otherwise been wasted. We melt these and recycle them in our work using processes such as granulation and casting. We work to minimise our waste and only buy what we need because everything is made to order so nothing is thrown away. We source other components such as stones from local business within the UK.

Our packaging is almost all recycled and recyclable, we use eco stickers to seal our packaging and even recycled ribbon, its plastic free and has minimal impact on the environment. Our packaging is only sourced from sustainable brands. Please remember don't throw away your packaging because although it will eventually biodegrade in a land fill this is a much slower process than if it's simply recycled.
